The best bowling analysis is 7–30 by Muttiah Muralitharan of Sri Lanka, against India at Sharjah on 27 October 2000. Muttiah was born in 1972 in Kandy, Sri Lanka, and began his cricketing career at school, where he was named the 1990 Bata Schoolboy Cricketer of the Year. The following year saw him bowling for Sri Lanka during a tour of England and later in 1992 he made his test debut at Sri Lanka's Khettarama Stadium.

During a tour of Australia in 1995/96 Muralitharan was no balled twice for bowling with a suspect action. Two umpires claimed his crooked arm action meant that he chucked rather than threw the ball. He was eventually examined by scientists at Hong Kong University where tests revealed Muralitharan has a genetic condition that means that he is unable to completely straighten his arm. This minor disability has not limited his versatility as a bowler. As well as his trademark right-arm off break he also uses three stock deliveries - the off spinner, top spinner, and floater techniques.

The highest electronically-measured speed for a ball is 160.45km/h (99.7mph) by Australia's Jeff Thomson against the West Indies in 1975.
