Sri Lanka: Community Development and Environment: This unique historical time period in Sri Lanka offers an ideal context for students interested in studying the inter-relationships between socio and economic development, environmental conservation, and cultural traditions. 3-week undergraduate summer program - 3 credits - with a focus on villages.
Curriculum Highlights: Some of the more specific issues to be addressed include: - how local NGOs work with village communities - ecotourism and cultural tourism as mechanisms for environmental protection & income generation - micro-enterprise and microfinance - role of women in health, education, and job creation
Setting Description: The course consists of homestays in villages, volunteer work, meetings with international aid agencies, community groups, NGOs, and government officials as well as visits to the many project sites, Buddhist temples, UNESCO World Heritage sites, wildlife sanctuaries and the like.

Setting Description: The course will consist of a rigorous academic component, home stays, volunteer work with local communities, meetings with international aid agencies, community groups, NGOs, and government officials as well as visits to the many project sites, historical sites, wildlife sanctuaries and the like.

Tsunami Disaster Management in Sri Lanka: Focus on disaster relief, rehabilitation and related issues of governance, sustainable development and role of donors and NGOs. Field visits and affiliation to NGOs.
Curriculum Highlights: Hands on field experience; meet top officials, NGO offcials, community leaders and tsunami victims to see how rehabilitation actually works
Setting Description: Two days background briefing at International Centre for Ethnic Studies, Kandy followed by field work.
Program Value: Graduate level three credits and senior year undergradute level three credits or for Certificate without credit

Democracy, Sustainable Development, and Violent Group Conflict: Designed for graduate students and professionals. Program consists of Seminars, Visits to Refugee Camps, Discussions with senior officials,media personnel, academics and others.
Curriculum Highlights: Great opportunity to learn about Sri Lanka's successes and failures in democracy, development, and human welfare. Access to and meetings with top officials.
Setting Description: Based at the International Centre for Ethnic Studies, Kandy Sri Lanka's foremost social science research institute. Kandy is a beautiful historic city located in the mountains.
Program Value: Very useful for those who are interested in disaster management, refugees, conflict, and post-conflict reconstruction.
